Not only was Gaius Julius Caesar extremely self-confident and power-hungry, he also mastered the art of marketing himself. The best evidence: his work “De Bello Gallico” (“From the Gallic War”).

Generations of pupils had to devote themselves to this work because the curriculum provided for it: Caesar’s extensive report on the conquest of Gaul in the years from 58 to 51/50 BC. What is often remembered as a rather arduous exercise from Latin lessons is actually extremely exciting reading – and above all: It is a masterpiece of political communication with the aim of showing one’s own deeds in the best possible light.
