As early as the Roman Republic, military leaders began to surround themselves with a troop of particularly experienced soldiers. The “Praetorian Cohorts” become increasingly important in the last days of the Republic – and made a permanent fixture by Emperor Augustus. The Emperor’s elite soldiers are the finest fighters Rome’s legions have produced. But their prominent position soon led to a claim to power by their leaders, which became a danger to the empire itself.
