Fleet growth is stagnating

There are that many cars in the Netherlands: more than 90,000 more than in 2022

Every year, hundreds of thousands of new passenger cars are registered in the Netherlands. Part of the existing fleet of vehicles simultaneously disappears abroad or ends up for scrapping. How many cars are there in the Netherlands? A hint: quite a bit.

On January 1 this year, the Dutch fleet consisted of 9,233,107 passenger cars. That was 90,830 more than on January 1, 2022. This is evident from figures from Bovag and Rai Association. This means that the Dutch passenger car fleet increased by just one percent between January 1, 2022 and January 1, 2023. At the beginning of this year there was one car for every 1.9 inhabitants. On January 1, 2010, that ratio was one to 2.1 inhabitants. In 1990 there were 2.7 inhabitants for every car.

Between January 1, 2021 and January 1, 2022, the Dutch passenger car fleet increased by 92,318 units (1.02 percent). Between 2020 and 2021, the Dutch vehicle fleet increased by 1.2 percent. Between January 1, 2019 – the last year before corona broke out – and January 1, 2020, the Dutch vehicle fleet increased by 151,289 to 8,938,572 passenger cars (+1.7 percent). The growth of the Dutch vehicle fleet has therefore stagnated in recent years.

How old are Dutch car owners?

Dutch residents aged 65 or older own 17.6 percent of the vehicle fleet. The age category 56-65 years owns 17.6 percent of the vehicle fleet, the category 46-55 years owns 17.3 percent of the vehicle fleet. Dutch residents in the 36-45 age category own 13.4 percent of the vehicle fleet, while 12.2 percent is owned by residents in the 26-35 age category. The youngest group – 18 to 25 year olds – owns a modest 3.9 percent of the passenger cars registered in the Netherlands. It is not known how old the drivers are for 15.2 percent of the cars.
