A handy developer has figured out which Macs can download macOS 12. Next Monday we will know if the list is correct, because then Apple will announce the new Mac software.
Which Macs can download macOS 12?
Developer Howard Oakley know which Apple desktops and laptops will be able to download the latest software version later this year. For this he looked at which computers were recently updated by the company. Based on this, the app developer makes a prediction on his blog which Macs will soon be able to download macOS 12.
If Oakley is right, the following desktops and laptops will soon be able to make the switch:
- iMac (2015 and newer models)
- iMac Pro
- MacBook (2016 and newer models)
- MacBook Air (2018 and newer models)
- MacBook Pro (2016 and newer models)
- Mac mini (2018 and newer models)
- Mac Pro (2019)

If this is correct, a lot of Apple computers will be dropped. For comparison, the list below shows all Macs that can download macOS 11 (nickname Big Sur):
- 12-inch MacBook (2015 and newer)
- MacBook Air (2013 and newer)
- MacBook Pro (2013 and newer)
- Mac mini (2014 and newer)
- iMac (2014 and newer)
- iMac Pro
- Mac Pro (2013 and newer)
It’s not clear why Apple is dropping so many Macs. Oakley speculates that the macOS 12 update may add a ton of features and require powerful hardware as a result.
We’ll know for sure on Monday
This Monday (June 7) at 7:00 PM, Apple kicks off WWDC 2021, its meeting for app developers. The highlight of the conference is the annual keynote. During this presentation, Apple will unveil all of its new software versions, including macOS 12.
Remarkably little has been leaked about the new Mac update. We expect Apple to give some apps a fresh look and expand the cooperation with other Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad, but we do not have any concrete information.
After the presentation of next Monday, the update will be available for download sometime at the end of this year. Prior to this point, avid Mac users can already use trial versions, but at their own risk.
