These were the most popular EVs in Western Europe in 2020

Although 2020 was a dramatic year in terms of new car sales, it was a good year for the rise of electric driving. It is now also known which fully and partly electric cars are most popular in Western Europe.

Sales of all-electric cars went wild in Western Europe in 2020, as it turned out earlier. No less than twice as many fully electric cars were sold as the year before. 726,000 to be exact. It is now also known that the Volkswagen Group sold the most numbers in that area in our part of the continent. Yet the Germans do not own the most popular all-electric car in Western Europe. That was the Renault Zoe, according to an analysis Schmidt Automotive Research. Exactly 97,158 of these were sold in 2020, with which Renault had a market share of 13.3 percent.

We don’t find Volkswagen at number two either. There is the Tesla Model 3. In 2020, 86,910 of these went to their first owner in Western Europe. The American accounted for a market share of 11.9 percent in fully electric cars. The top three is finally completed by the Volkswagen ID3, which was only delivered in large numbers towards the end of the year. Of these, 55,003 were registered, 7.6 percent of all fully electric cars sold.

Plug-in hybrids

It has also been calculated which plug-ins sold well in Western Europe last year. It turns out that Mercedes-Benz has the most popular PHEV with the plugged A-class, of which 28,530 were sold. However, the differences in the top three are small; In second place is the Volvo XC40 (27,051 units) and in third place we find the Mitsubishi Outlander (26,379). All good for a market share of around 4.5 percent for plug-in hybrids.
