Apple will release iOS 18.5 soon and a number of older iPhones will have an exclusive new function with the update. These devices are about!
iOS 18.5
An update will be added to the iPhone soon! Apple prepares the release of iOS 18.5. With the update, mainly small changes come to the iPhone. This way you get a new background and AppleCare is more clearly explained in the settings of the device. In the most recent test version of iOS 18.5, a new function has now surfaced, which only comes to a number of older iPhones.
With iOS 18.5, the satellite connection comes to the iPhone 13 series for the first time. At the moment this function is still exclusively for the iPhone 14 and newer, but the next software update changes. From iOS 18.5, users with an iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro and an iPhone 13 Pro Max can also activate a satellite connection. That is good news, because users are no longer dependent on the mobile network.

Satellite connection
Apple introduced satellite connection with the iPhone 14. With this function – as the name suggests – the iPhone connects to a satellite. This is especially useful when making emergency calls, you can always reach emergency services or roadside assistance in that case. This way you are no longer dependent on the coverage of the mobile network, especially abroad there are places where you have no mobile reach.
Users with an iPhone 14 and newer could already do an emergency call via satellites in those places, but with iOS 18.5 that is possible on even more iPhones. After installing the update, the satellite connection on every version of the iPhone 13 is available. Text messages can be sent via this connection and the location of the device can be shared if there is no internet range.

Release of iOS 18.5
With iOS 18.5, the iPhone 13 series gets support for satellite connection for the first time. The function does not work completely the same as with the iPhone 14 and newer, because the iPhone 13 lacks certain hardware. With the iPhone 13 series you are therefore dependent on an external provider for connecting with a satellite. In the Netherlands there is not yet a provider that offers this service.
It is still unclear whether that will change in the future. Abroad there are providers who give this option, including in the United States, New Zealand and Japan. In any case, it is a big advantage that IOS 18.5 brings the satellite connection to more iPhones, because the function has already saved lives. Do you want to know more about iOS 18.5?
