New data shows that Apple’s Find My system is indispensable for this handy AirTag feature – we’ll show you how it works.
This AirTag feature is more useful than you think
The AirTag feature we are talking about is generating a link when your luggage with an AirTag is lost. You can then share that link with your airline. It turns out that this way drastically reduces the chance of an airline losing your luggage.
These statistics were announced last month in a press release from SITAa company engaged in communications and information technology for aviation. Apple also announced the statistics earlier this month in a own press release.

The statistics
SITA explains that most pieces of luggage are usually found and returned successfully. Unfortunately, a small percentage is never found and considered ‘truly lost’. However, for luggage with an AirTag, this number drops by as much as 90 percent. Additionally, SITA says that airlines using this AirTag feature find delayed bags around 26 percent faster.
The data is based on it WorldTracer system from SITA. This is an automated baggage tracking platform used by all major airlines. These statistics show that it really is a good idea to hide an AirTag in your luggage when you travel.
That’s how it works
Apple introduced the AirTag feature with iOS 18.2 in December 2024. This feature lets you generate a link for a lost AirTag in the Find My app, which you can then share with others. Using that link, the airline can view a website that displays the AirTag’s location on an interactive map.
Apple has implemented systems with airlines to accept these Find My Location links. Airlines can then use the information to locate lost, delayed or mishandled luggage. The shared location is immediately disabled once the AirTag user finds their luggage.
