This car manufacturer produces 30 percent (!) of Apple’s iPads

A car manufacturer not only produces cars, but also 30 percent of Apple’s iPads. This is about this well-known car manufacturer!

iPads made by car manufacturer

A large portion of Apple’s products are produced outside the United States. The boxes of iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, AirPods and Mac(Book)s often state that the device was manufactured in China, India or Vietnam. Apple often distributes device production so that the company is not dependent on one specific factory. This previously caused major problems and delays with the iPhone iPhone 14 Pro (Max).

Yet a large proportion of iPads appear to be made by one partner, because BYD produces no less than 30 percent of all iPads. It is striking that BYD produces so many iPads for Apple, because the company is mainly known as a car manufacturer. It is reported that approximately 100,000 BYD employees participate in the production process of iPads. The company is also responsible for manufacturing parts for iPhones.

Collaboration between Apple and BYD

BYD is a popular competitor of Tesla, because the company produces cheaper electric cars. The car brand is therefore also responsible for the production of a large part of Apple’s iPads. Tim Cook’s visit to Beijing last month is therefore no surprise, because Cook indicated that BYD is an important partner of Apple. According to The Wall Street Journal Apple has been working with BYD since 2009. As of 2019, the automaker has been producing iPads for Apple on a large scale.

BYD produces full iPads, but that is not the case with the iPhone. The car brand only makes certain parts for the smartphone, such as the titanium edges of the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) and the iPhone 16 Pro (Max). The partnership with BYD will probably become more important for Apple in the coming years, as the company tries to become less dependent on China. The automaker has facilities in multiple countries, making it easier for Apple to move production of iPads and iPhones.

Apple spreads production

The collaboration between Apple and BYD is good news for both parties. Apple spreads the production of the devices across multiple manufacturers and locations. BYD provides access to other production locations in Asia, which may become unavoidable with higher US import duties on Chinese products in the future. For BYD, the collaboration is mainly financially interesting, the car manufacturer recorded a higher turnover than Tesla for the first time in the past quarter.

It is not surprising that Apple has chosen BYD, because the company is familiar with the production of large chips, batteries and software. For now, the automaker mainly produces iPads for Apple, which is reportedly around 16 million per year. More products may be added in the future, although Apple will want to prevent production from being placed too much with one company. Are you still looking for a new iPad?
