This iPhone function uses a lot of battery (and data): that’s how you turn it off

Does your iPhone battery empty too quickly? Then you probably have enabled a function on your iPhone, which consumes a lot of battery and data. Here you turn it off!

iPhone function costs a lot of battery

Do you have a relatively new iPhone, but the battery no longer keeps it full all day? In that case it is advisable to take a look at the settings of your iPhone. There are various functions that use a lot of energy in the background. One of the functions is the automatic installation of updates for apps. This function is enabled by default on your iPhone, but consumes a huge amount of battery and mobile data.

With automatic app updates, your iPhone installs new software versions of applications automatically. The advantage of this is that you always use the latest version of the app, with new features and software that is in order. The disadvantage is that this function uses a lot of energy in the background, so that the battery of your iPhone is empty faster. Does your iPhone use mobile data to install the updates? Then your mobile subscription will also go through it faster. This way you switch off the function.

Switch off automatic update

It is advisable to switch off automatic app updates on your iPhone to save on the battery. Applications are automatically updated in the background as standard, so that your iPhone uses more energy. In this way the function ensures that you do less with the battery of your iPhone. Do you want to prevent that? Then switch off automatic app updates. You do that as follows:

  1. Open ‘settings’ on your iPhone;

  2. Scroll down and tap ‘Apps’;

  3. Choose ‘App Store’;

  4. Under ‘Automatic Downloads> App-Updates’, switch off;

  5. Finally, turn off the switch behind ‘in-app material’.

Have you switched off app updates and in-app material? Then applications are no longer automatically updated in the background. With this function disabled you save a lot on the battery of your iPhone and you use less mobile data. Make sure that your applications manually update in the App Store, so that the security and software of these apps remains in order. Updates are also needed to access the latest features.

Can’t find the function on your iPhone? With users who have installed an alternative web store on their iPhone, automatic downloads are in a different place. In that case, go to ‘Settings> Apps> App installations’. Switch off ‘app updates’ and ‘in-app material’ to save on the battery of your iPhone and your mobile data.

More Apple tips

Another advantage of switching off automatic app updates is that you decide when you update an application. This can be useful with large updates to apps, which often still contain a number of software errors. With the function disabled, your iPhone does not install these new software versions, so you also do not suffer from recent bugs in the applications. It is advisable to eventually install the update, so that the protection of the app remains in order.

Do you want to temporarily disable automatic app updates on your iPhone? In that case you can also switch on the energy saving mode on the device. Automatic updates are then paused, so that the battery of your iPhone lasts longer. Do you want to save on your mobile data? Then go to ‘Settings> Apps> App Store’ and turn off under ‘Mobile Data> Automatic Downloads’, so that you are sure that the App Store will only download via a WiFi connection.
