This is how much it costs to charge your Apple Watch

If you charge your Apple Watch every day, you would expect it to use quite a bit of power. Still, the numbers are surprising: that’s how much it really costs to charge your Apple Watch!

Charging Apple Watch: that’s how much you use

Your Apple Watch may have the least impressive battery of all your Apple equipment. Not surprising, considering that a whole computer and all kinds of sensors have to fit in that small box. To give you an idea: the 16-inch MacBook Pro has a 100 watt-hour battery. The Apple Watch Series 9 is stuck at 1.19 watt hours, and the largest Apple Watch Ultra 2 is at 2.2 watt hours.

An advantage of such a mini battery: it is charged quickly, without consuming much power. According to a calculation of MacWelt, which takes into account the efficiency of the Watch’s magnetic charger (about 60%), it takes 1.98 watt hours to fully charge an Apple Watch Series 9. An Apple Watch Ultra 2 requires 3.6 watt hours.

What may that cost?

Now that we know how many watt hours you need if you want to charge your Apple Watch, we can do the math to find out how much it costs. At the time of writing, the average price per watt hour is about 0.039 euro cents. And we assume that you fully charge your Watch every day. This brings us to this:

Apple Watch Series 9

  • 0.039 cents x 1.98 watt hours = 0.07722 cents per charge
  • 0.07722 cents x 365 days = 28 cents per year

Apple Watch Ultra 2

  • 0.039 cents x 3.6 watt hours = 0.1404 cents per charge
  • 0.1404 cents x 365 days = 51 cents per year

In other words: for what you pay annually for charging your Watch Ultra, you can just buy a chocolate roll at Albert Heijn. And if you have a normal Watch, you have to make do with a Kaiser roll. We can miss that.
