This is how you block unwanted callers on your Android device

Are you regularly harassed on the phone? Or do you have a salesperson on the phone for the umpteenth time and have you had enough? Then it is time to take action. On an Android phone, you can easily block unwanted callers.

While the exact way you block unwanted callers can vary by device, the process will be broadly the same. We show you how to block callers using a Samsung Galaxy phone.

Open the Phone app on your device and tap Recent to view your call history. In this menu you will find three dots at the top right of the screen. Tap that and choose Institutions and Blocked numbers. Here you can enable an option to block anonymous numbers immediately.

If you also use your phone for business, this is probably not very useful because you may miss calls from colleagues or contacts who are not in your contact list.

It is then more convenient to block numbers manually. You do this again in the menu Blocked numbers by tapping the plus sign at the top right of the screen and then selecting a number from the list of recent callers or contacts. The numbers are then immediately blocked.

Samsung itself also has a feature to identify and deal with unwanted phone calls, called Smart Call. If you receive a call from an unknown number and your phone suspects that it is possible spam, you will immediately see this on the screen with a large red exclamation mark. You can then block or report a number before or after you answer the call so that you are not harassed twice.

The Smart Call function can be turned on in your Phone app by pressing the three vertical dots again and to Institutions to go. Here you will find Spam and Conversation Screening. The option View Caller & Spam ID you can switch it on or off here. You can also Filter suspected spam conversations to block spam calls immediately. You won’t get notifications about missed calls or voicemails, but you can still view filtered calls in the call history and listen to received voicemails.
