Discord is a comprehensive communications service available for computers and smartphones. The program allows you to message each other, sign up for specific groups and channels, or call each other. But how do you actually call via Discord?
DIscord is a program made by and for gamers. The makers jumped into a gap that other digital calling programs left behind and focuses in particular on the quality of the voice over IP calls.
The calling experience has also been kept quite simple and designed, but that does not mean that everyone knows exactly how to start a telephone conversation. That is why we explain exactly how to proceed in this article.
Add friends
In order to start a phone conversation via Discord, you first need friends. You can only have conversations with people who are on your friends list. You can add friends in two ways.
For example, on a Discord server in which you are active, you can click on the username of the person you want to add. Then click on their avatar and you can send a friend invitation via the green button.
Otherwise you can click on the option for friends via the menu on the left and also press the green button. In this way you must be familiar with the username of a user, since you have to look up the person.

Once you’ve added someone, you can give the calling a try. Fortunately, starting a phone call is quite simple. By the way, you can call in two ways: with video or audio-only (without image).
Click on the heading in the left menu friends and choose the person you want to call. You select that person with the right mouse button and then click To call in the context menu. You can also open a direct message (DM) and press the phone or camera button at the top. Then you start an audio or video call.
It is also possible to start a conversation with several people at the same time, such as with apps such as Skype, Zoom and Microsoft Teams can. First you create a group chat. You do that under the heading friends on the plus button next to Direct messages to click. You choose the people you want to add and then press one of the two buttons again.
Things to keep in mind
There are some things you should keep in mind when you want to use Discord for your audio and video calls. For example, the service does not offer user-to-user encryption; for this you have to rely on WhatsApp, for example.
In addition, you can share your screen with your friends, up to 720p and 30 fps. You can also adjust your own background and it is good to check the audio settings if you run into some problems.
