This is how you get started with Word Online

Microsoft Word Online is an online version of the powerful word processor Microsoft Word. You can do almost anything with Word Online that you can do with the regular program. Furthermore, the interface is accessible, so you can use the online word processor in no time. But how exactly do you proceed? This is how you get started with Word Online.

The first step you take is to visit Microsoft’s website where you get Become Online finds. You must log in with a Microsoft account (such as Hotmail, Live or Outlook). If you don’t have an account yet, you can create one on that page. Then enter your password and press the login button. You will now be taken to your personal landing page. If you have some documents stored in your OneDrive folder, you will find them here. On the left you will find the different online environments of Office Online. Press the blue Word icon.

Using Word Online

If you are already familiar with the interface of the regular Word program, the online interface feels like a warm bath. On the next screen you can create an empty document, choose from a specific template or open a file that is stored in OneDrive (OneDrive is Microsoft’s cloud storage service). For most of the interface, you will find almost the same functions as in Word 2016.

At the top you will find all options in the ribbon, as Microsoft calls the environment with all editing options. You can choose from the traditional or simplified view, whichever you prefer. You do this by pressing the down arrow on the far right and confirming your choice. With the navigation buttons at the top (with the titles File, Start, Insert, etc.) you determine the layout of the ribbon. You can also change the name of the document by clicking on ‘Document – saved in Word’. For the rest, the options correspond almost entirely to Word.

Create new document

You create a new document by clicking the appropriate button on the first page, after clicking on Word from the personal loading page. That’s the button with the plus sign, with the text below it New blank document. Once saved, you’ll find that document in the list of recently saved documents, so you can quickly get back to it after a hard day’s work. It is important that you give the document a clear name, so that you can find it quickly. So you do that by pressing ‘Document – saved in Word ‘.

Now you can start tapping and working. You do that in the same way as in the regular program. With the various contextual functions at the top you can adjust the format of the file. We say ‘contextual’ here, because the possibilities change when you click a different navigation button. In the meantime, the file is automatically saved for you. You do not have to arrange that saving manually. If you want to close the document, simply close the tab you are working in or go back to your personal landing page. Even then your work will be saved.
