This is how you know if your iPhone’s battery needs to be replaced

Is it almost time to replace your iPhone’s battery, or can you continue with it for a while? In this article you can read how to check this, where to go if replacement appears to be necessary and how much it will cost you.

Do you need to replace your iPhone’s battery yet?

With normal use of your iPhone, the battery is generally the first part that needs to be replaced. This is not because the battery is so fragile, but because of the constant charging and draining. After about 500 to 1000 charging cycles, the battery has had its best time.

There are a number of things you can do to extend battery life, such as keeping your iPhone’s battery level between 30 and 90 percent. But sooner or later the end of the battery is in sight. The only thing left is to replace the battery or buy a new iPhone. Here’s how to check if it’s time for that yet:

  1. Open the Settings app;

  2. Scroll down a bit and tap on ‘Battery’;

  3. Tap ‘Battery health and charging’.

If the ‘Maximum capacity’ there is less than 80%, then it is (according to Apple) time to look at a new battery.

Replacing the battery: these are the costs

At Apple itself, you pay between 79 and 119 euros for battery replacement. As a rule of thumb: if your iPhone has Touch ID, it costs 79 euros, if you have one with Face ID, count on 99 euros. You only pay 119 euros for a new battery with the iPhone 14 models.

The fastest way is to make an appointment with one Apple Store (or a recognized Apple service provider where prices are almost certainly the same) and take your iPhone there. Often this can even be done on the same day. You can generally pick up your iPhone a day later. Another option is to send your iPhone to Apple, but then you always have to deal with delivery times.

Always make a backup first

While replacing the battery is not likely to cause you to lose any data, it is still a good idea to make a backup first. In fact, Apple requires that a backup be made beforehand, because the manufacturer takes no responsibility for data loss.

By the way: if other problems are found in addition to a battery that is at the end of its tether, there is a good chance that these also need to be resolved. Additional costs may be charged for this.
