This is the new Volkswagen Passat Sedan

With a huge catch

Volkswagen Passat Pro

The brand new Volkswagen Passat, which was presented last year and is only available as a Variant. At least, until now. This is the new Volkswagen Passat Sedan! However, there is a catch that is as big as its grille. A big one.

For the first time in decades, the Volkswagen Passat is no longer available as a sedan in Europe. The ninth generation of the Passat, introduced in 2023, is only available as a Variant in our corner of the world. This is striking, as the technical sister model Skoda Superb is still available in two body variants. After all, it is available as a Combi, but also as a Hatchback. Yet there is now a new Volkswagen Passat Sedan, but it is not coming to Europe. AutoWeek has turned up the plates of the new Passat Sedan from the database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

‘Wait a minute,’ we hear you thinking. ‘You’ve already presented us with a new Passat Sedan, haven’t you?’ That’s right! In January this year we were able to show you the first plates of the new Volkswagen Magotan. To put it bluntly, the Magotan is the cousin of the Passat Sedan that is produced by the Chinese joint venture FAW-Volkswagen. Volkswagen’s second Chinese partnership – SAIC-Volkswagen – will receive a real Passat Sedan. Not only is it called Passat, but it also looks more like our Passat Variant than the Magotan.

The new Volkswagen Passat Sedan – which appears to be called Passat Pro to distinguish it from the previous and still lined model – is 5.06 meters long and has a wheelbase of 2.87 meters. In Europe, the Passat Variant has 2.84 meters between the front and rear axles. In any case, the Chinese Passat Sedan will be available with a 160 hp 1.5 TSI and a 220 hp 2.0 TSI. Of course, you can immediately forget about that, because the Passat Sedan is not coming to Europe. Do you consider that a loss?
