2.0 or Turbo?

This Porsche 924 is nice, but not entirely original – In the Wild

In its time, the Porsche 924 was certainly not an uncontroversial Porsche, but nowadays it mainly receives sympathetic reactions. This red one from 1977 also deserves that, although it is not quite as it should be.

Porsche made a name for itself worldwide with the 911, but it was not for everyone. For a more modest budget, the brand therefore put forward the 914 at the dawn of the 1970s in collaboration with Volkswagen. However, it was very far removed from the 911, with its mid-engine and standard targa roof. Porsche then decided to take a completely different tack for the ‘budget Porsche’, although it once again contacted Volkswagen for the development.

The result appeared at the end of 1975 and bore the name 924. Volkswagen had already dropped out due to the oil crisis, but the nose of the 924 still contained a power source that originally came from Wolfsburg. This made the 924 Porsche’s first front-engined model and the first with a water-cooled engine. You can imagine that this raised eyebrows here and there. The design, with the folding headlights and the enormous glass dome on the back (also used on the Renault Fuego), also caused division. It only became really sporty with the arrival of the Turbo in 1978.

Porsche 924

This Porsche 924 spotted by AutoWeek forum member D oh dates from 1977 and is therefore certainly not a 924 Turbo. No, this one just has the 2.0 without the cochlea. Connoisseurs immediately spot something that is not right; After all, it does have the air scoops in the nose that belong to the Turbo. A colleague and former 924 driver points out to us that the side mirrors also do not appear to be original and come from a later example. So there is some damage to the car, but hey, we’ve always enjoyed seeing one again. Certainly an ‘early’ and original Dutch one.
