The Focus function is useful for all kinds of situations, but is most used for a good night’s sleep. We show how that works.
This is a focus
The focus mode has been around since iOS 15 and is not disturbing an extension to the function. The difference is that at Focus you choose whether you want to receive notifications (or not) from certain people. The function is useful if you have to concentrate as well at work, temporarily like your iPhone or if you want to enjoy a good night’s sleep.
You can of course choose to turn off your iPhone or switch on the aircraft mode. But that is not always handy, because you will no longer receive messages or notifications at all. Sometimes you want certain friends or family to be allowed to reach you. Then the Focus function comes around. There are a number of standard options, including driving, gaming, mindfulness, work and reading. But you can also create a focus yourself.
Set a focus for an undisturbed night’s sleep
Do you have such a friend who sends all kinds of unimportant apps in the middle of the night? Then of course you can temporarily dampen his chat and all group chats in which he is. But it is a much better idea to set a focus for an undisturbed night’s sleep. You do this in the following way:
- Open the Settings app and tap ‘Focus’;
- Tap at the top right of the plus sign and tap ‘Sleep’;
- Tap ‘adjust focus on’ and then on ‘persons’;
- Tap ‘Add’ and select the contact persons that you can disturb;
- Tap ‘ready’.

Incidentally, you can also choose to only dampen notifications of specific people. In that case, choose ‘Keep notifications’.
All you have to do is fill in is from what time to what time the focus must be active. You do this in the app Health:
- Open the Health app and tap ‘Sleep’;
- Scroll down and tap ‘Full schedule and options’;
- Ensure that ‘sleeping schedule’ and ‘use schedule for sleep focus’ are enabled;
- Under ‘full schedule’, fill in the start and end time.

You can always start a focus that is created manually. To do this, open the control panel (wipe down from the top right on your screen) and tap ‘Focus’. In the list that appears you tap the focus that you want to switch on.
