Just because we can’t use Apple Intelligence here yet doesn’t mean we can’t delete objects with AI.
This is how you delete objects without Apple Intelligence
We do not yet have Apple Intelligence in the Netherlands. This has to do with European regulations. Changes are coming, but you still have to be patient. According to Apple, we can use Apple Intelligence in the EU from April 2024.
Yet you can already remove objects from photos without Apple Intelligence, but with AI (Artificial Intelligence). This can be done for free with the Google Photos app. There is a limitation, because you are only allowed to edit ten photos in this way per month. If you want more, you have one Google One Premium account required (99.99 euros per year for 2 TB). We’ll show you how it works.
Delete objects with the Magic editor
The tool that allows you to remove objects from your photos is called the Magic editor and is therefore part of the app Google Photos. Download and install the app if you haven’t already. One condition is that your iPhone has 4 GB of working memory (RAM). In practice, this means that you need at least an iPhone 11. The tool works as follows:
- Open the Google Photos app;
- Tap the photo you want to edit;
- Tap ‘Edit’ at the bottom;
- Now tap the icon at the bottom left (Magic editor);
- Tap or tap the desired object;
- Adjust the selection if necessary;
- Tap ‘Clear’ at the bottom.
You now have a number of results, which you can view by swiping left. If you are satisfied with one of the results, tap it at the bottom right finch. Then tap ‘Save’.
If you still see remnants of the original object, you can manually delete it using the Magic eraser. Open the edited photo, tap Edit, then tap Tools. Here you choose ‘Magic eraser’ and you can easily remove the last leftovers. Try the option ‘Clear‘. If that doesn’t work well, you can also ‘Camouflage‘ try.
Would you rather have Apple Intelligence?
If you are not in a hurry, you can also choose to wait a few more months. You can then use Apple Intelligence for free and without restrictions. But in the meantime, it’s fun to experiment a bit with the Magic editor in Google’s Photos app.
