Apple will soon choose to automatically install macOS High Sierra on your iMac and MacBook. However, there are times when this is not convenient. This will prevent macOS updates from being automatically downloaded and installed.
Turn off macOS automatic updates
If you don’t want to update your Mac to the most recent version of macOS, you will have to dive into the settings. Even if the macOS Sierra installer is already on your Mac, you can still manually remove it. Handy for people who are used to an older version, or use specific programs that may no longer work.
Apple will always ask before installing an update, but the installer will take up unnecessary space on your hard drive that way. Fortunately, unsubscribing (and registering) for this automatic update is not difficult if you know where you are looking.
- Click on the Apple logo in the top left corner of the screen;
- Go to ‘System Preferences’;
- Click on App Store in the window that appears;
- Select the square for ‘Download new updates in the background’.
Now that you’ve done this, macOS updates will no longer be downloaded in the background. All you have to do now is delete the macOS installer. You do this by going to the Finder and finding the macOS Sierra installer in the list of programs. You can then delete this as you do with any file. Finally, don’t forget to permanently delete it by emptying your trash.
