Tip: this is how you use the ‘silent notifications’ of iOS 12

iOS 12 introduces several options for curbing your iPhone use, or making your phone less distracting. A small, but handy feature is the option to set ‘silent notifications’. iPhoned shows you how to do this.

Using silent notifications in iOS 12

Tip: this is how you use the ‘silent notifications’ of iOS 12

iOS 12 allows users to receive notifications silently. That may sound crazy, but it works simple. When you receive a notification, they will appear in Notification Center, but they will not end up on your homescreen and you will not hear a sound. The notifications are therefore not completely off (after all, they can be found in the Notification Center), but you will have as little trouble as possible.

It may take a while to silence notifications. You need to do this specifically for each app from the home screen of your iPhone. Follow the steps below.

  1. If a notification from an app appears on your homescreen (such as Snapchat), swipe it to the left;
  2. You will then see several options. Then choose ‘Management’;
  3. Tap Deliver Silently to only receive silent notifications from that app.

Keep in mind that you will have to repeat the steps above with each app. This is a bit of extra work, but it does give you the opportunity to think carefully about which applications you want less distraction from. If you prefer to receive normal notifications later, go to ‘Settings> Notifications> Choose an app’ and let the relevant app show notifications again.
