Tip: View your city in 3D with Apple Maps

Apple has added a number of Dutch cities to the Flyover function of the Maps app. With this update, users can browse digitally through Amsterdam, for example. Read here how you can discover your hometown in 3D.

Flyover in Apple Maps: This is how it works

With the Maps app from Apple, you have been able to view cities in 3D for some time with the Flyover feature. This way you can view different areas in the highest detail from home. Tall buildings, special monuments and striking locations are displayed in three dimensions. As a user of Apple Maps you then fly through this.

To discover a location in the Maps app with Flyover, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Maps app on your iPhone or iPad;
  2. In the search field, enter the name of the city you want to view with Flyover;
  3. As soon as you have opened the city, press the i icon at the bottom right;
  4. Then select ‘Flyover tour’ to start.

Amsterdam and surroundings in 3D in Apple Maps

For a long time only three cities were available for the Flyover function in the Netherlands: Rotterdam region, Eindhoven and Utrecht. Amsterdam and its surroundings have now been added to this list. You can now float with ease through Amsterdam, Haarlem, Zandvoort or Zaandam.

In addition to the Amsterdam region, a number of smaller municipalities have also been added to the position. With places such as Lisse, Abcoude, Amersfoort, Soest, Baarn and Leusden, the central Netherlands is also better represented within the Maps function.

The Flyover images were taken in the spring of 2020. A bird’s-eye view of how empty it was during the first months of the intelligent lockdown. This provides a unique view of the Netherlands. For example, an empty Dam Square in Amsterdam is rarely seen.

At the moment, the following Dutch and Belgian cities are available for a visit with Apple Maps:

  • Abcoude
