Tip: WhatsApp automatically makes backups of your chats

You probably share everything on WhatsApp, but do you keep it all? In this article we explain how to make a WhatsApp backup so that your personal chats, photos and videos are not just lost.

How to make a WhatsApp backup

WhatsApp is one of the most popular apps ever. Without realizing it, you probably share all of your possessions with family, friends and acquaintances. It is therefore a minor disaster when you suddenly lose all your precious chats, photos and videos, for example because your phone is stolen. You can avoid that hassle by regularly making a backup.

This is how you make a WhatsApp backup on your iPhone:

  1. Open WhatsApp on your device;
  2. Go to ‘Settings’ at the bottom right and choose ‘Chats’;
  3. Tap ‘Backup’ and press the blue button.

All your WhatsApp files will now be backed up. This backup includes chats, shared photos and videos. The backup is uploaded to iCloud. That’s great, because that way all your personal data is safe in Apple’s cloud, even if you lose your iPhone.

You can also create a schedule in the same settings menu. This way you do not have to make backup copies manually, but WhatsApp makes a backup of itself once in a while. For example, you can choose to make a daily backup. That way you won’t suddenly lose all your recent calls when your phone is stolen.

Are you unable to make a daily WhatsApp backup? First check whether the green chat app has permission to add files to your iCloud. You can check this by tapping your name at the top of the Settings app. Then choose ‘iCloud’, scroll down and make sure the switch behind WhatsApp turns green.
