Tip: with this icon in iOS 12.2 you can search faster in Safari

The search field in Safari is slightly different from iOS 12.2. From now on, an arrow icon will give you smart suggestions that will make you search even faster in Safari. That is how it works.

Search faster in Safari thanks to the suggestion arrow

Apple’s default browser Safari has long offered search suggestions to help you find what you’re looking for faster. But where you used to go straight to Google when you pressed a search suggestion, iOS 12.2 introduces a new way of searching.

You can now search even faster in Safari thanks to blue arrows. These arrows let you expand a search without going to Google. In fact, you don’t have to type as much to complete a search. You use the smart suggestions as follows.

Tip: with this icon in iOS 12.2 you can search faster in Safari
  1. Open Safari and tap the address bar at the top;
  2. Enter your search query;
  3. Suggestions for faster searches appear automatically as you type. Select one if it matches your search query;
  4. Complete this by typing yourself or tapping on a new search suggestion.

The arrows immediately complete your assignment, so you usually only have to type one word yourself. By tapping a search suggestion a few times, you can look up fairly specific things in no time. It does not matter which default search engine you use in Safari.

Private windows are less effective

It sounds like a very small and simple improvement, but it saves a lot of hassle if you often did not find what you were looking for with search suggestions before. Because you can tap on the faster search suggestions as well as complete them yourself, you will be right with doing a search once.

It is important to note that the feature works best when you don’t have Safari in private mode. If you do have Safari on private, quick search suggestions appear less and less often. More useful tips & tricks can be found on our extensive tip page.
