Too bad: Apple is permanently discontinuing this iconic product series

Apple has added another series of devices to its list of outdated products. That’s bad news, because Apple is stopping repairs for this product series.

Apple ends product series

Apple regularly adds devices to a list of vintage and outdated products. For vintage products, it has been five years since the last generation of the device was released. Devices on this list will no longer receive software updates. With an outdated product series, Apple goes even further, because the company then stops repairing the devices. Apple considers products obsolete more than seven years after release.

Earlier this year, Apple added the AirPods, HomePod and iPhone X to the ‘vintage’ list, meaning that these devices no longer support new software versions. With the iPod nano and the iPod shuffle, Apple goes one step further, because the company now considers the entire product series as outdated. Do you still have an iPod nano or an iPod shuffle? Then you can no longer go to official Apple Stores for repairs. Apple is suspending all repairs for both product lines.

iPods more than 7 years old

Apple released the last iPod nano in 2015. The device then appeared in a series of new colors, but Apple made no other changes to the iPod nano. Two years later, the device was withdrawn from sale on July 27, 2017. That was now seven years ago, which means that Apple has now stopped repairs for the entire product series. The iPod nano has not received any software updates for some time.

The same applies to the iPod shuffle, Apple will also stop carrying out repairs for this product series. The last generation of the iPod shuffle was released in 2010, Apple withdrew the device from sale in 2017. Unlike the iPod nano, the iPod shuffle does not have a touchscreen. You only operate the device with the buttons. Are these broken? Then you can no longer contact Apple for a repair.

This iPod is not outdated

Bad news if you still have an iPod from this product series, because it will be a lot more difficult to have the device made. Other providers may still make the device, but no original Apple parts are used. Yet Apple’s choice is not very strange, because it has been a long time since the last generation of the iPod nano and iPod shuffle appeared.

Repairs will remain possible for the iPod touch for the time being, because Apple has only stopped selling that device in 2022. This means that Apple will not stop carrying out repairs on this product series until 2029. So don’t worry if you have an iPod touch, because it is still being made for the time being.
