Which new cars managed to generate the most attention in 2020? A look at the sales figures apparently does not say everything, because some of the cars you were looking for were not absolute top sellers this year. This is the top 10 of the most searched new cars in Carbase!
Given the current popularity of SUVs and crossovers, you might expect this top list to be full of them. That turns out to be not too bad, because only four out of ten cars are higher on their feet. In addition, it is striking that no brand returns twice in this top 10. That makes the list at least nice and varied.
10. Renault Captur
The Renault Captur is the last of this top 10. Ever since its introduction in 2013, the Renault crossover has been quite popular. The French unveiled the second generation last year, which thus manages to put itself back in the spotlight. Last month, the Captur was in seventh place in the top 10 best-selling models.
9. Hyundai Kona
Based on the sales figures, the popularity of the Hyundai Kona EV seems to be slightly waning lately. Incidentally, Hyundai also supplies the Kona with a petrol engine, but that variant is a lot less popular in the Netherlands than the electric one. Anyway, the Korean is still in the spotlight, as is evident from his ranking in this top 10.
8. Kia Niro
Two group members next to each other in this list. The fully electric e-Niro is also the most popular variant for the Kia Niro. Last month, 713 copies of the 1,217 Niros sold were an e-Niro, with which the EV accounts for more than 58 percent of the total sales. Both in the sales figures and the total searches, the Niro appears to be slightly more popular than the Kona, so Kia can make a long nose towards Hyundai.
7. Audi A3
The Audi A3 does not currently have a top ranking in the sales figures, but many people also seem to be interested in Audi’s variation on the Golf theme. That popularity does seem to be on the wane, because the number of A3s sold has been steadily declining since 2016. The contemporary popularity of SUVs and crossovers does not help the A3 Sportback and A3 Limousine, of course, although we must not forget that the A3 Sportback as an e-tron was extra popular years ago because of its favorable addition percentage at the time.
6. BMW 3 Series
In terms of popularity, no other model from BMW can match the 3-series. When it comes to motorcycles, there is of course a lot to choose and compare, so no wonder you often looked it up in Carbase.
5. Toyota Yaris
The fourth-generation Yaris, unveiled this year, is a major break from the hatchback’s gray past. Toyota is trying to make its image more attractive and it is evident in the more frivolous design of the Yaris. It gives the new Yaris a lot of attention, which is also evident from the listing in the top half of this list.
4. Ford Focus
The Focus is now in the fourth generation and will run for two years in its current form. In terms of sales numbers, he continues to do well, because last month the Focus was still in sixth place in the top 10. Remarkable: compared to 2019, the number of units sold has almost doubled. Still clever in this eventful year.
3. Skoda Octavia
Third place on the podium is for the Skoda Octavia. At the end of 2019, the Czechs unveiled a new generation of the spacious C-segmenter for the first time after eight years. The Octavia is no longer in the top 10 of the best-selling cars, but the model still accounted for more than 23 percent of Skoda’s total sales in the Netherlands this year. The Octavia thus holds its own in the midst of all the SUV and crossover violence.
2. Volkswagen Golf
Only the Seat Leon is still missing from this list, but otherwise the MQB quad of the Volkswagen Group from the C-segment would have been complete. It comes as no surprise that the Volkswagen Golf is the most sought after car of the four. Volkswagen unveiled the new Golf at the end of 2019, but now the popularity of that model in our country seems to be outclassed by a considerable margin by the ID3. The second place in the top 10 most wanted cars is therefore more of a small consolation for the loyal Golf.
1. Volvo XC40
We’ve already seen it a number of times in the top 10 most wanted cars of our private lease comparator, but the Volvo XC40 is also taking the profit all year round. Volvo already came up with the XC40 at the end of 2017, but this year the crossover received attention again because of a completely new variant: the P8 Recharge, or Volvo’s first fully electric car. That extra boost makes the XC40 the best-selling car after the ID3 last month and gives it the victory when it comes to the most searches!
