Around larger lamps
Why the Toyota Camry from around the turn of the century did not go down in the books as a particularly stylish and simply beautiful appearance, has never become clear to us. It is crystal clear that the car received a facelift halfway through its career, where, as is often the case, more has changed than it seems.
The Camry of the internally called XV20 generation appeared on the market in 1996. In Japan, just like its predecessor, it was available as a station wagon and sedan, but in this case we were only served the sedan. Even then it became clear that the large Toyota would play an increasingly smaller role in Europe, although the current generation is again for sale in the Netherlands. But we digress. As far as we are concerned, the XV20 distinguishes itself to this day with a remarkably sleek, slender body. Its body is very slim, which, thanks to the many horizontal lines in the rear, is especially clear from the rear. It looks wide, sleek and is simply well-proportioned. The fact that the car was nevertheless often described as ‘drowsy’ at the time, is perhaps mainly due to (prejudice and) the unfamiliar front.
In 2000 a facelifted version of this Camry was driven into the showroom. At first glance, little had changed. After a quick look, we notice clear glass in front of the headlights, some more chrome around the grille and a slightly different front bumper. However, there is more to it, because both the headlights and taillights are slightly larger in the newer version. In both cases, this is because some centimeters are added to the units at the bottom. With the now clear rear lights, this is especially the case in the middle, on both sides of the license plate. The taillights are therefore no longer completely straight after 2000. At the front, the difference is even less noticeable, but we should note that the headlights cut a little deeper into the front bumper after the turn of the century. The car also gets a separate high beam section in the headlight from the facelift. This offers a practical advantage above all, because the combined H4 solution of the original offers considerably less visibility on dark roads. Is the facelift of this Camry also successful? Have your say in the comments!
