Toyota has a new study model in the development rooms that goes by the name X Prologue. Toyota’s European division is already showing a teaser record of what’s to come.
Toyota is releasing a teaser image of a brand new study model: the X Prologue. The brand keeps its lips tight, which means that speculation can begin. Still, Techzle thinks it already has a good indication of what the X Prologue is for. We expect the X Prologue to be a precursor to the all-new Aygo. We explain why.
Toyota logo (Hybrid)
We start with the design, because there is enough to say even based on this single image. The X Prologue gets a particularly pronounced snout. We see strikingly designed C-shaped headlights that merge completely into one another. The Toyota logo is located centrally on the nose, but there is something striking about it. Toyota gives all its hybrid models a logo that is partially painted in blue. The Toyota logo on the muzzle of the X Prologue has to do without a blue finish. That may indicate that the X Prologue does not have a hybrid powertrain. Which new Toyota already announced is also not expected to get hybrid powertrains? Indeed, the successor to the Aygo.
Toyota Aygo with ‘X-design’
But there are more clues. Toyota calls its new concept car ‘X Prologue’ and although an ‘X’ usually refers to ‘cross’ and you might think this is a crossover, in this case the ‘X’ looks like a reference to the Aygo. Not only does the current Aygo have various versions with an ‘X’ in the name, think of the X-Joy, X-JLB and X-clusiv, the current Aygo also has a typical ‘X-face‘that was once again emphasized in the facelift implemented on the model in 2018. In addition, it is specifically Toyota Europe that sends the teaser plate of the X Prologue into the world. This may indicate that the X Prologue was specifically devised by the European division of Toyota for the European market. Let the Aygo be a car that is not sold outside the European borders.
Our theory is not yet watertight, but when we add up all the clues, everything seems to fall into place. Yet there is also the possibility that Toyota is heating up the mood for a new electric model. The new X Prologue Concept will be presented on March 17th.
Aygo successor
Toyota confirmed at the beginning of March that the Aygo will get a successor. Contrary to the current model, it is being developed completely independently and therefore not together with Stellantis, formerly Groupe PSA. So no Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108 brothers and sisters for the Aygo successor. Although it is not yet certain that the Aygo successor will be called Aygo again, we do know that the car will be placed on a shortened version of the GA-B platform. This base is currently used under the Yaris and will also be placed under the Yaris Cross to be marketed later this year. A B-segment basis for the new Aygo, something that Toyota says is possible by the economies of scale that arise from the platform for three models. We expect that the successor to the Aygo will not get an electric powertrain and that a hybrid system will also be omitted.
