Toyota transfers Russian plant

Toyota has handed over its factory in Saint Petersburg to NAMI. The factory closed its gates in September last year in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Shortly after the invasion, Toyota already stopped car production in Russia, but in September it was decided that the factory near St. Petersburg would no longer open. Now the factory is no longer owned by Toyota. The Japanese report that the factory was handed over to NAMI, the national automotive research and development institute, on Friday. The factory, which opened in 2007, produced Toyota’s Camry and RAV4 almost exclusively for the local market.

It is not the first factory run by a Western country to come into the hands of NAMI. Earlier it also took over facilities from Renault and Nissan. Since the sale by Groupe Renault, NAMI is also the largest shareholder of AvtoVaz, the parent company of Lada. There is therefore a good chance that Ladas will roll off the line in the former Toyota factory, although NAMI is also responsible for the Aurus brand, which builds luxury models such as the Komendant. It is not known how much money is involved in the acquisition of the Toyota factory. Previous such acquisitions were mainly for symbolic amounts.
