‘Traffic volume grows after corona, but hardly any loss of time’

Traffic on Dutch roads is expected to increase again after the corona dip, according to the report presented on Thursday. Key figures Mobility 2020 of the Knowledge Institute for Mobility Policy (Kim). However, the loss of time on the road will hardly increase, if at all.

That would reverse the trend, as the loss of time in 2018 and 2019 increased more than the volume of traffic. Traffic volume on the road will be approximately five to ten percent above the 2019 level in 2025, according to KiM.

Because the road capacity will be expanded in the coming years, the increase in traffic can be absorbed. A change in behavior will also contribute to this, as more people are now used to working from home or traveling outside rush hours. As a result, the loss of time on the road in 2025 may remain at the level of 2019.

KiM also expects public transport use to recover in the coming years. The knowledge institute estimates that in 2025 just as many people will use public transport again as in 2019. In a more gloomy scenario, public transport use will still be about eight percent behind last year.
