Use iCloud to exchange information between the iPad/iPhone and the Windows computer. Put iCloud on the computer and you can access data on your mobile device there too.
What is iCloud?
iCloud is a so-called cloud service. It allows us to store and view files, photos, contacts and notes in the cloud (on the Internet). It is standard on a Mac, iPhone and/or iPad. People who also have a Windows PC can install special software or access iCloud from the Internet.
Login on mobile device
Sign in with your Apple ID to use iCloud Drive.
- Tap on Institutions.
- Is your name at the top? This means that you are already logged in. Isn’t this the case, but do you have an Apple iD? Then tap Log in to your iPhone/iPad.
- Tap on E-mail and type the email address.
- Tap on Next one.
- Enter the corresponding password and tap Next one.
- Anyone who has other Apple devices or who has provided a phone number will receive a verification code on them. Enter this code.
- Enter the passcode for the iPad/iPhone if it is set.
Set up iCloud on iPad/iPhone
Turn on various parts of iCloud on the iPad/iPhone.
- Tap on Institutions.
- Tap your username at the top.
- Tap on iCloud.
- In the window you will see an overview of apps and functions that can be set up for iCloud. If the slider behind the app name is green, or you see the text ‘On’ behind the app, then the data from this app is being saved. Tap the slider or text to adjust the setting. You have the following options:
- Photos: For photos, Apple has a separate service within iCloud consisting of the options ‘iCloud Photos’, ‘(Upload to) My Photo Stream’ (not always available) and ‘Shared Albums’. The first two options are important for viewing your photos yourself. Upload to My Photo Stream automatically copies new photos to a folder that’s visible on all your devices. However, the photos only stay in the folder for 30 days. With iCloud Photos, you not only have access to the latest photos, but you can access the entire photo collection anywhere, anytime.
- iCloud backup: A backup is a backup of your device that you can use to later transfer to a (new) device.
- Keychain: Keeps saved passwords up to date on all authorized devices.
- iCloud Drive: you use this to store documents online.
- Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Safari, Messages, Notes, etc.: Turn on these sliders to access the data from these apps on your other devices.
Set up iCloud on Windows
Through www.icloud.com you can access a lot of information that is also on the iPad/iPhone via the internet browser on the computer. Think of the Reminders, Calendar or Contacts. But more is possible with iCloud on the PC. For a Windows 10 computer, there is the so-called iCloud Control Panel to enable iCloud on the PC as well. You can then synchronize Outlook e-mail, contacts and calendars. Also Bookmarks from Internet Explorer, Firefox or Google Chrome can be synced with Bookmarks from Safari on iPad/iPhone. And view the photos you take with the iPad or iPhone on the computer.
- Set up iCloud on the iPad/iPhone (as discussed above).
- Download iCloud on the PC.
- Continue to the next paragraph.
Enable iCloud features
- On the PC, click the button Start > iCloud > iCloud.
- Enter your Apple ID username and password if necessary. You also use this Apple ID on your iPad or iPhone. Then click on login. On your Apple device, tap Allow. You may receive a verification code afterwards. Copy the code to the PC and click Get on.
- Apple asks if it can send diagnostic information. We click do not send.
- The items that synchronize are checked. These are iCloud Drive, photos, Mail, contacts and diaries (for example from Outlook), bookmarks and Passwords from the browser. Uncheck the items you don’t want to sync via iCloud. You can also turn it on or off at a later time.
- If you left the checkmark next to Bookmarks, please give via Options after it which browser to use the Bookmarks from. Check the desired browser(s) and click OK.
- click on To apply.
- Click on Ready.
- click on Close to close the iCloud program.
Find iCloud data
When iCloud is enabled on PC, the data that is on the iPhone or iPad can also be found on it. Do this like this:
- Click the button at the bottom left Start. Then do not click on iCloud under ‘Recently added’, but scroll down to the letter I. Here are the different parts of iCloud.
Also, the sections show “iCloud,” “iCloud Drive,” and “iCloud Photos.” iCloud is the program that allows you to set what you want to enable on the computer. With iCloud Photos, the item opens on the computer. Via the Explorer it is also possible to open this folder by clicking on Pictures > iCloud Photos. Open the iCloud Photos folder by double clicking it. The ‘My Photo Stream’ folder contains the photos that are also on the iPhone or iPad. With iCloud Drive, File Explorer also opens. Shows the folder containing all the files stored in Drive.
