Manually transfer photos and videos to the computer. From the digital camera, tablet or smartphone, it is all possible via the Explorer.
Transfer without utility
You can transfer the digital photos and videos you take to your PC. This can be done with a utility on the PC. But you don’t necessarily need such a program if you know the method via the Explorer. This method works for digital cameras and for most tablets and smartphones. Whether it works on your device is a matter of trying.
Transferring recordings with File Explorer
The device you connect to the computer appears in File Explorer. You can then copy the photos and videos to a folder on the computer via File Explorer. Proceed as follows:
- Turn on the device and connect it to the computer via the supplied USB cable. A digital camera usually needs to be turned on to playback mode (where you can view recordings).
- Open the Explorer. To do this, click on the File Explorer icon on the Taskbar
or use the key combination Windows+E.
- Click on a tablet or smartphone if necessary To allow or Allow.
- Click on the left in the Explorer on This PC.
- On the right you will see ‘Devices and drives’. Below that is the connected device, for example shown as “Removable Disk” or the name of the device. Double click on it.
- You are now, as it were, inside the device. Look for the folder called DCIM. In this folder you will find the photos and videos that are on the device. The folder will have a different name for each device.
- Copy the images from here and paste them into a folder on your computer. You can read how to move or copy files in Explorer in the article ‘Organize files’.
Disconnect device from computer
Before removing the connected device from the USB port, you must remove it properly. Otherwise, the files on the stick may be damaged.
- Click the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ icon in the lower right corner of the Taskbar (to the left of the Windows clock)
. First click on the arrow ‘Show hidden icons’
if you don’t see the icon.
- click on [Naam van het apparaat] eject.
- Remove the device from the computer when you see the message that it is safe to remove.
Don’t see the Safely Remove Hardware icon at all? Then you can do nothing but pull the USB cable out.
Device not visible in File Explorer
If your camera is not visible in the Explorer, read the tip ‘Getting devices working under Windows’.
