Twitter gets an edit button for tweets: you need to know this

Twitter will soon give users the option to edit tweets after they have been posted, it has announced itself. It has been the most requested feature in the Twitter community for years and will now be tested by a limited group first.

Twitter edit button

It sounds so simple, the ability to edit a post you post online afterwards, but Twitter has resisted the idea for years. “We started out as an SMS service and as you well know there is no way to retrieve a text once it has been sent. We wanted to keep that vibe, that old-time feeling,” Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said in 2020 in an interview with wired

Now Twitter is unexpectedly backtracking on that decision. In a Tweet via his Twitter Commsaccount, the social network announces that an edit button has been in the works for a year. It is intended that this feature will be available first as a ‘Labs feature’, or a test feature, and also only to a limited group of users who have a paid Twitter subscription. The so-called Blue subscription, which is not available in the Netherlands and Belgium.

The edit button should appear in the coming months for Blue users, but Twitter isn’t immediately sharing whether it will make this feature available to regular free users after that, but the company seems to mean that as it specifically talks about a test phase for Blue- subscribers.

April 1 joke

Twitter actually announced the arrival of an edit button a week earlier, but the company did so on April 1 with one dry sentence: “We are working on an edit button”. In that context, the tweet in question was not believed to be true, but it was still no joke.

Earlier it was also announced that Twitter is working on a podcast function and the possibility to leave a conversation that you no longer find interesting. The social media app is also testing a downvote button on users and a feature to pin DMs. Are you happy with the announcement of an edit button, or are you worried that Twitter will lose some of its charm?
