Two years without an update: these Apple products have been standing still for a while

Just this week, a number of Apple products received a ‘fresh edition’. But there are more and more older products that have not had a refresher for two years. This list of products seems to have been forgotten by Apple. Or will the company soon be banging out a bunch of updated hardware?

A new version of a large number of Apple products is released almost every year. But some are exactly the same as when you bought them two years ago.

Not an update from Apple but certainly not old

Now, of course, you don’t have to immediately take these products to the garbage can. Many of them are still functioning properly. And not everyone has the luxury of getting the latest of the latest. So waiting for an update is still fine.

These products below have not received any attention and a new version in two years.

Apple Pencil

The second generation Apple Pencil was released at the time of the iPad Pro in 2018. That makes the magic stick about 4.5 years old now.

A key feature of the second-generation Apple Pencil is that it attaches magnetically to select iPads for wireless charging. You can also switch between drawing tools and brushes within apps like Notes by double-tapping the Apple Pencil’s built-in touch sensor.

There are no rumors at all when a new version of the Pencil will be released.

Apple Mac Pro

This machine is now three years old and is the company’s last Intel-based desktop. This year, the high-end desktops are expected to be updated with Apple’s M2 Ultra chip, making it the fastest Mac ever, and essentially an entirely new machine.

Pro Display XDR

If you see the Pro Display XDR in person, you might understand why a new version hasn’t been released yet. It was released along with the Mac Pro in December 2019, making it more than three years old. But trust us, you won’t notice it.

In December, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said Apple is working on several new external monitors, including an updated version of the Pro Display XDR that will be equipped with an Apple Silicon chip, just as the cheaper Studio Display has an A13 chip. It is unknown when it will see the light of day.

AirPods Pro Max

You’d almost forget it, but it’s been two years since Apple’s AirPods Pro came out. Apple’s over-ear headphones have not received any hardware updates since then and remain firmly priced (629 euros).

The fact that Apple is working on a new version is of course no surprise, but according to experts it will not be until 2025 until that headset sees the light of day.

HomePod mini update

Apple recently released a new version of the HomePod, but we still have to wait for a new version of the mini. The handy speaker was released in 2020.

It can be argued that the HomePod mini will not need a new version at least between now and a year. With minor updates and new features, Apple still manages to get the most out of it.
