At a large number of petrol stations in the United Kingdom, the pumps will only continue to drip for the foreseeable future. According to the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA, the British trade association for petrol stations) it will take even longer before the situation is normalized and the petrol stations have sufficient stock again.
According to the PRA, more than a quarter of the petrol stations affiliated with the trade association are currently without petrol and diesel. Two thirds of the nearly 8,400 pumping stations in the country are affiliated with the PRA. Fuel is available at a fifth of those filling stations, but only to a limited extent. The organization thinks it could be weeks before everything is back to normal.
The fuel shortage in the UK is the result of a shortage of truck drivers to transport the fuel to the filling stations. The British government is therefore deploying a reserve fleet of tankers driven by civilians and the army will also help with supplies. At the gas stations that are open, there are long lines of waiting motorists who want to buy fuel. In some cases, disturbances have also arisen.
The fuel shortage is actually a stimulating factor for the sale of EVs. Earlier this week, a British dealer that only sells EVs reported that his business is in full swing. Currently, EVs have a 9 percent market share in the UK. Whether that share is growing extra fast due to the fuel crisis will have to become clear in the coming months.
