Universal search with iPadOS 14: this is how it works

iPadOS 14 adds a new search function to your iPad: Universal Search. We show you how it works.

This is how you do a universal search with iPadOS 14

You could always search on your iPad, but previously this function took up the entire screen. With iPadOS 14, Apple has added a nicer and better search function: Universal Search. It basically works the same as Spotlight on the Mac. You can find apps, documents, contacts and websites with it. That is how it works.

Universal search is only possible on the home screen. You call the function by swiping down on the screen. If you’re using a keyboard, you can also press the command key and the spacebar. It is not entirely coincidental that this is the same combination with which you activate Spotlight on the Mac.

You can now search for anything you want. For example, if you search CNN, you will see not only the app (if you have it installed), but also frequently used keywords in safari, web suggestions and pages you have previously visited. In addition, you can directly open the settings of the app.

If you search for the name of a company, you will also see web suggestions. You can also open Maps directly to see exactly where this company is located. If you search for an artist and have a subscription to Apple Music, you can also play music directly from that person.

Universal search in iPadOS 14 is not a revolutionary improvement, but the search results are presented much more clearly than before. Apple also promises that this feature is self-learning. The more you use it, the better the results.

More new features in iPadOS 14

iPadOS 14 adds many more new possibilities to your iPad. If you own an Apple Pencil, you can now write on the screen, for example. The iPad automatically converts your words into typed text. Provided you have a little legible handwriting, of course. We have listed the 6 most important new functions in iPadOS 14 for you.
