Update: Apple Maps now shows speed cameras

Apple Maps now warns drivers about speed cameras. While navigating, the map service shows where the speed cameras are. It also works on CarPlay.

Apple Maps warns about speed cameras

You can recognize the flashes by a yellow icon with a camera in it. For the time being, only fixed speed cameras are shown and mobile speed cameras are therefore not visible. Apple Maps tells you whether the speed cameras are checking for speeding or going through a red light.

Want to check for speed cameras? Then update the Maps app from Apple. The update is rolling out in phases, so you may have to be patient. Also, your iPhone must be running at least iOS 14. This software version was released in the summer of 2020.

The new feature also works on CarPlay, Apple’s on-the-go platform. Not using this and navigating via your iPhone? Then Apple Maps does not show what kind of speed cameras are involved. In the CarPlay version of Apple Maps you can see what the speed cameras check for.

Pay attention

You will not get a warning when you approach a pole. It is therefore important to check yourself whether there is a speed camera along your navigation route. Incidentally, you will only see the speed cameras during route guidance. So when you are planning your route, you do not yet see where speed cameras are located.

Other apps, including the Dutch Fitsmeister, do actively warn you about speed cameras on the road.

More about Apple Maps

In recent years, Apple has been working hard on Maps, also called Maps in the Netherlands. In the summer of 2020, for example, the company had cars driven through Belgium and the Netherlands to create detailed maps.

At the end of last year, a major update for the Flyover function followed. This allows residents of certain Dutch cities to view their city from above in Apple Maps.
