Updating apps on an Android device

Updating apps on an Android device

Apps get regular updates. Set on the Android device whether you want apps to be updated automatically and via which internet connection.

Apps are continuously improved and renewed. New versions of such an app will then become available. An update allows you to use the latest features and improves the security and stability of the app. That’s why you need to update the apps from time to time. This can be done automatically or manually. You can also indicate whether apps are only allowed to update via WiFi or also via the mobile internet connection.

If you like updates to happen automatically, set all apps to update automatically:

  • Open the app Play Store.
  • Tap your Google account icon. That is the circle containing your initials or initials.
    Google account icon
  • Tap on Institutions > Network Preferences > Automatically update apps.
  • A window with several options will appear.
    • Tap on Through any network if you don’t care when an apps update. Data costs are charged if updates are made via the mobile network.
    • Tap on Only via WiFi if you only want to do updates when the device is connected to Wi-Fi (recommended).
    • Tap on Apps don’t update automatically if you don’t want this anyway.
  • Tap on Finished.

Do you not want all apps to update automatically, but do you think this is important for a few apps? Then select which apps are allowed to update automatically:

  • Open the app Play Store.
  • Tap your Google account icon. That is the circle containing your initials or initials.
  • Tap on Manage apps and device.
  • Tap the tab To manage.
    Manage tab
  • A list of all apps installed from the Play Store will open. Tap an app that you want to update automatically, for example your bank’s app, WhatsApp, or an email program.
  • Tap the three dots icon at the top right.
  • In the panel, tap Auto update on.
  • Optionally tap Yes.

Tip: Make sure ‘Auto update on’ is checked for apps you don’t want. Uncheck the boxes if necessary.

If you prefer to keep an overview of which apps update when, you can update apps manually. We don’t recommend it, but it is possible.

First turn off the automatic updating of all apps:

  • Open the app Play Store.
  • Tap your Google account icon. That is the circle containing your initials or initials.
  • Tap on Institutions > Network Preferences > Automatically update apps.
  • Tap on Apps don’t update automatically > Finished.
  • Tap the left arrow in the top left to return to the Play Store.

Update apps manually like this:

  • Tap your Google account icon again.
  • Tap on Manage apps and device.
  • Tap on Updates available.
  • All apps that can be updated are listed with “Update” or “Update” behind them.
    • Are they all apps that you use a lot and would like to see improved, then tap Update all. Sometimes an additional agreement is requested to update the apps. Tap a few times if necessary Accept.
    • You can also choose to update the apps one by one. In that case, tap the arrow to the left of the ‘Update’ or ‘Update’ button. ‘What’s new’ appears below the app with associated information. Read what the app wants to change. If you agree, tap To update or To update.
