US regulator will investigate Ford BlueCruise after accidents

The American traffic regulator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will investigate Ford’s BlueCruise, which makes semi-autonomous driving possible.

Two incidents in which Ford’s Mustang Mach-E collided with stationary vehicles prompted the investigation. With BlueCruise, driving is partially automated, with the idea that the driver monitors performance. Both collisions happened during ‘night light conditions’ and each resulted in at least one death, according to the regulator.

Previous investigation determined that BlueCruise was turned on in both cars immediately before the collisions. BlueCruise is only available on certain roads and uses a camera monitoring system to monitor the driver’s attention.
