Sales of used EVs are lagging behind despite subsidies

Consumers ignore electric cars too often. And this despite the subsidy, which will therefore remain next year. As a used car, the EV is not yet a runner, because the supply is limited and the prices are high.
What about the stagnation in sales of new and used EVs? Bovag spokesperson Paul de Waal: “There is certainly still trading in used EVs, but it may not be going as fast as hoped. The sentiment is currently somewhat negative. For example, there is a threat of a weight-based motor vehicle tax, which will make owning an EV more expensive than owning a petrol car. You notice that this feeling has an influence on the market, but especially when it comes to new sales.”
More EV used cars imported than exported
This effect seems less visible on the used car market, which De Waal supports with figures. But growth? Meh. From January to September 2022, 41,344 used EVs were sold, compared to 42,889 in the same period this year. “The market for used EVs is therefore stable,” he emphasizes. When it comes to import and export, he provides interesting figures. In 2022, 4,571 used electric cars were exported and the Netherlands imported 18,675.
Used EV still too expensive for private drivers
According to Igor Roso, sales manager of used cars at the Vallei Auto Groep dealership, the practice is more difficult. “The demand is there, but the supply of relatively cheaper EVs is not yet. The electric cars that are now for sale are still expensive for many private individuals. Especially in combination with the high interest rates and uncertainties surrounding prices and versions of new EVs, this causes somewhat disappointing sales. Because new cars, including electric ones, are widely available, the price difference between an old and a new EV is becoming smaller, to such an extent that people sometimes prefer to opt for a new one.”
The current range of EV used cars is inadequate
ChrisJan Lammerts from Vakgarage Nederland: “No, it is not going as fast as last year. The current EV range does not always meet expectations. Think of a tow car for the caravan, large luggage space and long range. Every advantage, such as a subsidy, is of course included, but the customer also looks at the practical usability of the car. Not everyone has their own charging option at home, solar panels or goes on holiday by plane. The real push effect seems to fade a bit.”
