Using App Podcasts on Mac

A podcast is a recorded audio clip that you listen to at any time. On the Mac, this is possible (since macOS 10.15 Catalina) via the Podcasts app. This app contains many different types of podcasts. From recorded radio programs and spoken columns to interviews, radio plays and documentaries. Ideal to listen to, for example, while cooking, while gardening or simply in the lazy chair.

On a Mac with the operating system macOS 10.15 Catalina or higher, the Podcasts app is standard to listen to audio programs. On previous versions of the operating system, you can listen to so-called podcasts via the iTunes program. However, in this article we will only discuss the Podcasts app. Open this app as follows:

  • In the Dock, click finder Icon Finder with face .
  • On the left side of the Finder window, click apps.
  • Double click on Podcasts.
  • Click the first time Start listening.

As we mentioned, there are many different podcasts available. To help the listener find an interesting podcast, Apple offers help with overviews. Click in the left menu Discover to view podcast suggestions within different categories. Want to know what the most popular podcasts are right now? Then click in the left menu on Charts. Here are the most listened to programs and their episodes. To view the most popular podcasts on a particular topic, click at the top right All categories and then a category.

Got a tip for a specific podcast? Then look it up directly.

  • Click on the top left Search in the search bar.
  • Type the search term. For example, the name of the podcast or a topic.
  • Press the Enter key.
  • Search results appear. These are divided into programs and episodes. Click on a program to see an overview of the podcast. Click on an episode to instantly listen to a specific episode of a podcast.

Starting a podcast can be done in different places and in different ways. For example, double-click an episode’s introduction text. Or click the play sign in the image for an episode or podcast. As soon as an episode starts playing, the podcast will be displayed at the top of the screen. To its left are three buttons for rewind, pause, or fast forward.

Found a nice podcast? Then subscribe to the program. This way you can easily find the program and you are always aware of new episodes.

  • Search for a podcast in one of the aforementioned ways and click on the podcast.
  • Click on the top right Subscribe.
  • The podcast can now be found in the left menu under ‘Programs’. There you will find an overview of all podcasts to which you are subscribed.
  • Click in the left menu Episodes. An overview with the latest episodes of the podcasts you have subscribed to appears. Double click on such an episode to listen to it immediately.
