Have the browser tabs been in the wrong place for the past two decades? If you’re using the recent version of Microsoft Edge, you’d think so, because this browser can now also place tabs in the left column. And that turns out to be useful.
Step 1: Tab Actions button
It took us two weeks to get used to the fact that those tabs are no longer at the top, but if you stick with it, you’ll be convinced that the sidebar is indeed where the tabs should always be. On a modern widescreen monitor, you can easily keep twenty-five tabs in view without shrinking the page titles.
There is a real chance that your vertical tabs are already set. Look in the top left corner and look for the icon that looks like a thumbnail browser window. When you click on that, the browser switches to vertical tabs and you can get started right away. If this option isn’t already active, you’ll need to go to Edge’s settings.
Step 2: Settings
Click on the button with the three horizontal dots at the top right. This is how you get to the menu and then you go down to Settings to select. In this window, select the button in the left column Appearance† This allows you to see the different themes on the right, but you have to scroll further down until you reach the group Customize Toolbar comes. There you activate the option Show Tab Actions Menu and with Show vertical tabs for all current browser windows click on Switch†
As a result, you will now see the button in the sidebar to display the vertical tabs. This button toggles between horizontal and vertical tabs. By default, the tabs are represented by small icons, the favicons. If you hover over the left sidebar, the names of the websites will also appear in the tabs. If you like this view, you can pin the tab window with the pin button.
Step 3: Tab groups
The vertical tabs become even more useful when you combine them with the function Tab Groups† This is an experimental feature that you can find by clicking in the address bar edge//flags to type. In the list of experimental functions, look for Tab Groups and you add this function.
Now if you right click on a tab, you get to the function Add tab to group and then you can create a new group, or select an already existing tab group.
