Fadil (Opel Karl Rocks) in the top three
The Vietnamese manufacturer VinFast will bring its first cars to the European and Dutch market this year. The extent to which Dutch consumers are interested in the company’s automotive goods will become clear in the coming years. In any case, VinFast cannot be avoided in the sales statistics in its home country of Vietnam.
In Vietnam, 23,757 new passenger cars were sold in June. About 30,000 new passenger cars were registered in the Netherlands in that month, almost 9 percent less than in the same month of 2021. In Vietnam, the number of registrations is much less marked. In June, only 441 fewer new cars were registered than in the same month last year, representing a percentage decrease of only 1.8 percent. If we look at the first six months of this year, it is striking that the number of newly registered passenger cars has actually increased. And not just a little bit. In total, 203,118 new cars were registered this year, 35.6 percent more than in the first half of 2021. The solid growth figures are mainly due to sales that fell sharply last year.
Toyota can call itself the sales king of 2022 in Vietnam so far. The brand sold more than 43,000 new passenger cars there, which means it has a market share of more than 21 percent. In second place is Kia (35,485 cars, market share almost 18 percent). In third place we find Hyundai, which closely follows Kia with 33,395 cars sold in the first half of 2022. Honda, Mazda and Mitsubishi fill in fourth, fifth and sixth place in succession.

That was 7.5 percent less than in the same period of 2021, but VinFast is nicely good for a market share of 7.3 percent in its home country. The brand even has two models in the sales top-10, one of which has even managed to claim a position on the podium. The Toyota Corolla Cross is the best-selling model in the first six months of 2022, the Hyundai Accent finished just behind. In third place is the VinFast Fadil, in fact an Opel Karl Rocks with VinFast badges and different design elements. In contrast to the models that VinFast will sell in the Netherlands, the Fadil simply has a petrol engine. In tenth place we find the VinFast VF e34, an electric crossover designed by Pininfarina with a 44.5 kWh battery and a 150 hp electric motor. The VF e34 is VinFast’s first EV and also the first electric car built in Vietnam.
