The relatively young car manufacturer Vinfast is setting up a joint venture in its home country of Vietnam to enable the production of solid-state batteries.
Vinfast has signed a memorandum of understanding with ProLogium, a Taiwanese company engaged in the development of solid-state batteries. The joint venture to be set up will eventually start producing solid-state batteries (SSBs) in Vietnam for the electric models of Vinfast, which also has big plans for the European market.
Solid-state batteries are seen as the absolute top when it comes to battery technology. They have a higher energy density, can withstand higher temperatures and are said to have a longer life than conventional lithium-ion batteries. Where lithium-ion specimens use a liquid as a connection between the two poles, with the solid-state batteries this is a solid. Vinfast has already announced a range of electric models, which the company plans to sell in Europe as well. It is not yet known whether this first series of EVs from Vinfast destined for the European market will receive solid-state batteries, it may be too early for that.
