Volkswagen Atlas under the knife

Volkswagen has made a facelift on the Atlas in the United States. The car shows several outward similarities with its younger Cross Sport brother after the point session.

It is 2016 when Volkswagen is expanding its North American delivery range with the Atlas (photos 11 and 12), a 5-meter long SUV that is known as Teramont in China. The SUV, built in Chattanooga, is now a few years old and therefore the time is ripe for a facelift.

Thanks to a new grille that now runs under the adjusted headlight units and new bumper work, the appearance of the Atlas has been brought in line with that of the Atlas Sport Cross, a sportier Atlas version that appeared last year with – yes – a sloping roof line. The new bumper makes the car more than 7.5 centimeters longer than before. No further modifications have been made to the wheelbase. Novelties can also be seen at the rear, although the modifications here are also limited to the installation of revised lighting units and a new bumper. Volkswagen is screwing a new steering wheel inside and is expanding the list of available safety systems with, among other things, a function that allows the Atlas to travel independently in traffic jams.

On the engine list is a 238 horsepower blown four-cylinder and for those who find that too modest, Volkswagen has a 281 horsepower V6 on the menu. Switching is in all cases with an eight-speed automatic. Four-wheel drive is not standard. The starting price of the Atlas is in the United States, where the Touareg is not available, at roughly $ 30,000, converted around € 27,500.
