Volkswagen CEO: ‘bond with Ford is growing’

Despite MEB doubts

Volkswagen CEO: ‘bond with Ford is growing’

If we are to believe Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume, the collaboration with Ford will only become more intense and extensive in the coming period.

“We are only at the beginning of our collaboration,” Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume is said to have said. According to Automotive News, he also reports that the cooperation with Ford will intensify. Somewhat striking, because Ford itself seemed to be somewhat restrained in previous reports about at least one part of the collaboration. Ford will soon present its first EV on Volkswagen’s MEB basis, but has already indicated that only two models will appear on this platform in total. After that, the originally American brand switches back to a platform developed in-house.

However, the partnership between Ford and Volkswagen, announced in 2019, extends beyond EVs. The two brands have also found each other in the field of commercial vehicles, where Ford and Volkswagen were just about the last players to market vans solely under their own brand name. That is a lot more expensive than what a competitor like Stellantis does. That is why we now know a Ford Transit/Tourneo Connect based on the Volkswagen Caddy, there will be a Volkswagen Transporter based on the Ford Transit Custom and Volkswagen has used the Ford Ranger as a starting point for its new Amarok. Perhaps we can expect (many) more of these types of co-productions in the future.
