Volkswagen will be presenting the ID4 this month, a new electric SUV that, like the ID3, uses the MEB platform. Recently we drove the first meters with the electric newcomer, which of course resulted in interesting details!
Slowly but surely, the first copies of the fully electric ID3 are crossing the Dutch borders. The electric hatchback is the first of a series of ID models to be introduced. The second ID model is the ID4, an electric SUV that should be seen as the Volkswagen equivalent of the Skoda Enyaq. The ID4, which gets the Nissan Ariya as a direct competitor, is just like the ID3 and the aforementioned Enyaq on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform specially designed for EVs. Techzle recently drove the first meters with a slightly camouflaged pre-production model, which not only provides interesting images, but also fascinating information.

Volkswagen will start with the delivery of the ID4 this year. Initially, it comes on the market in various rear-wheel drive versions. The first is the ID4 Pure, a 148 hp and 220 Nm version that draws its energy from a 52 kWh battery pack. It is also available as the sportier ID4 Pure Performance, which has a 170 hp and 310 Nm delivering electric motor on the rear axle. Is there more to choose? Hell yes. Higher up the ladder, Volkswagen is putting the ID4 Pro, which delivers 175 hp in combination with the larger battery pack of 77 kWh in its bottom. Above that, the ID4 Pro Performance holds sway for the time being, with 204 hp power. That provisional topper sprints to 100 km / h in 8.5 seconds, with a top speed of 160 km / h, which is the same as the top speed of the other versions. The ID4 Pro Performance also has the 77 kWh battery pack on board. All rear-wheel drive ID4s have a maximum towing weight of 1,200 kilos. Next year, Volkswagen will add a four-wheel drive Performance version to the ID4 range. That topper has two electric motors on board that together produce 306 hp. That version can even pull 1,400 kilos. This 306 hp top version draws its zest for life from an 82 kWh battery pack. The largest package may also come into the picture for less violent motorized versions.
Interior Volkswagen ID4
Regardless of the chosen version, you can fully charge the roughly two-ton ID4 at a regular charging station with three-phase alternating current with a maximum of 11 kW. The ID4s with the 52 kWh package can be charged on a fast charger with up to 100 kW direct current. The 77 kWh versions even kick it on the fast charger to a maximum charging power of 125 kW. Expect an electric range of around 340 kilometers for the basic versions. The maximum range of the ID4 is probably more than 500 kilometers.
Luggage compartment Volkswagen ID4
Dimensions
The ID4 is 4.58 meters long, 1.85 meters wide and 1.61 meters high. This makes the ID4 32 centimeters longer and 6 centimeters higher than the ID3. With a car length of 4.65 meters, the Skoda Enyaq is another 7 centimeters longer than Volkswagen’s sister model. The luggage compartment of the ID4 has a capacity of 543 liters. This means that the SUV consumes a lot more than the ID3, which kicks it up to 385 liters. However, the ID4 must recognize its superior in the Skoda Enyaq in terms of space. It has a luggage compartment with a volume of 585 liters. In both cases, the new Golf Variant in the rear is even more spacious. You can carry 611 liters of stuff in it.
ID models
In addition to the ID3, ID4 and the recently caught ID6, Volkswagen has a whole series of ID models planned. For example, Wolfsburg will come out with a production version of the ID.Vizzion in 2022. That same year it may be joined by a station wagon, of which the ID. Space Vizzion already gave a realistic impression. More ID violence comes in the form of the production version of the ID.Buzz and its order version, the ID.Buzz Cargo. The model name ID5 may be reserved for the coupé variant of the ID4.
