Sober survivor

You sometimes come across a Volkswagen Golf II or a Polo from the same time, but the Passat B2 has largely disappeared from the streets a little earlier. Certainly really neat specimens are rare. It’s so nice that one is now for sale.
Earlier this month in In het Wild we still thought about an Opel Ascona C hatchback, now we’re putting a direct competitor on your screen. A seemingly neat Volkswagen Passat B2 hatchback, to which we immediately ask the following question: can you remember the last time you came across one of these? And if so, was it such a neat one? Yes, photos can deceive, but here it seems that (except for the wheels) an almost suspiciously sleek car. A Passat like this, a perfectly normal 1.6 CL, has actually in no way managed to gain enthusiast status. It is therefore special that the now 36-year-old middle class has made it so cleverly to this age.
How did he do that? Well, it seems that the first owner of this Passat imported from Germany owned the car until 2004, because the VW was serviced by the same dealer in Hamburg from new until that year. After that, the documented history in the maintenance booklet ends, it seems. In any case, very little was driven with it in those years, because in 2004 the counter stood at 22,833. The 116,400 from a year earlier seems to us, given the course before, a writing error. That would have been 16,400.
In the past twenty years, if the current odometer reading is correct, the Passat has only driven a mere 60,000 km. Now the counter shows 81,000 km. Although little driving is not necessarily good for a car, it probably explains why this Passat is still so fresh. According to the provider, the technical part is in order. That is still worth a closer inspection, especially since it has an asking price of €4,950. If it’s as good as it looks, then we understand the high stakes, although the question remains whether anyone thinks the Passat is worth a bid in that direction. A better chance to buy a nice Passat B2 probably won’t come your way anytime soon.
