Volkswagen registers new ‘GTI’ logo

New label for sporty EVs?

Volkswagen registers new ‘GTI’ logo

Volkswagen already has the GTE label, the GTX label and of course the time-honored GTI badge, but there may be something new in the pipeline. A ‘GTI’ logo that may appear on (partly) electric cars of the brand. But what happens to the rest?

Volkswagen caused quite a stir when it gave the hybrid drive a sporty look about ten years ago with the GTE label. Nowadays, a sporty hybrid is fully established and cars like the Mercedes-AMG C63 SE Performance prove that it can sometimes go very far. In 2023, the GTE label is no longer so prominent and it is rather the new GTX label for pure electric cars that demands attention. Of course, the regular GTIs are still there, but the question is how long that will be the case. Volkswagen already seems to be preparing for an era in which everything comes together under one label.

Carbuzz has turned up a new logo registered by Volkswagen in a German patent database. The font is unmistakably that of the existing sporting labels, only it seems that the lightning bolt at the end should form the ‘i’. Of course it could also be pronounced as something else. There is a chance that this logo will sooner or later appear on all sporty Volkswagens, now that electrification becomes the norm. The classic GTI label will then disappear with the phasing out of the purely fuel-powered sporty models and new sporty EVs and the successors to existing GTX and GTE models will get this new logo. We wait and see.
