It sounds like an early April 1 joke, but it really does seem to be. Volkswagen will use the ‘Voltswagen’ brand name on its electric cars in the United States.
Volkswagen’s electric cars will be sold in the US under the new brand name ‘Voltswagen’. That claim comes from the American CNBC. That medium is based on a leaked press release from Volkswagen America, which should have been sent on April 29. The generally knowledgeable Automotive News says that someone within Volkswagen confirms it and that it really is not an April joke. The name change should distinguish electric Volkswagens more from conventionally powered models.
The electric models are reportedly still provided with the well-known Volkswagen logo, although in the case of the ‘Voltswagens’ the logo has a light blue background. There would also be Voltswagen on the back of the cars. As mentioned, the change would only apply to Volkswagen’s fully electric cars. There are also no plans to implement the same change outside the US for the time being.
Although it is specifically stated that it is not a joke, it is a remarkable change. If there is no news this week that it was a joke after all, then it should be officially announced by the American branch of Volkswagen at the end of April.
