A handy new function in macOS Sequoia makes it possible to automatically end a volume such as a .dmg to unmoune as soon as a process that copies files ends.
Under macOS, the process where a connected disk or volume is securely disconnected from the operating system, so that it can be removed without risk.
If you have ever copied a large file from a .DMG file under macOS, then you probably know that you can only disconnect the .DMG file when copying the files is completed. In that case you will have to return to MacOS Finder at a later date to unmounge the .DMG file.
This is because the file system of the .DMG is in use during copying. Finder keeps the linked volume of the .dmg locked as long as it is in use.
From MacOS Sequoia you can indicate in Finder to automatically disconnect the volume of the .DMG once the copying is complete.
This works as follows: Couple (mount) the .dmg of your choice by double -clicking on it. Start by copying the files by dragging them from the volume of the .dmg to a folder in Finder. Then, while the copy is still being copied, control click on the linked volume and select the ‘Remove Name Volume’ option in the pop-up menu that appears.
If the copy is still active, the Finder gives a warning that the volume cannot be ejected because it is in use. From MacOS Sequoia, this warning window contains the new button: Remove after completion.
If you click on the button, the Finder will automatically unmouning the volume of the .dmg when the copying is complete.
This is of course only a small change in macOS, but one that is handy and ensures that .DMG files are not unnecessarily mounted in the Finder app.
